Escalating a consumer or financial complaint

A complaint is easier to assess when it states the problem, the evidence and the requested resolution clearly.

Start with the organization

Use its documented complaint or customer-service process where appropriate.

State a concrete resolution

Refund, correction, delivery, explanation or account adjustment are clearer than a general demand to 'fix this.'

Keep the record

The FTC currently advises consumers to keep notes about contacts, dates, promises and copies of online submissions when solving problems with a business.

Escalate to the right external body

Regulators, ombuds services, licensing bodies and courts have different jurisdictions; identify the one that actually covers the issue.
